How to play Kakuro
Kakuro — sometimes called cross-sums — is a number logic puzzle that looks like a crossword grid. Instead of letters you place the digits 1 to 9, and instead of word clues you have sums. Each "run" of white cells (horizontal or vertical) has a target total shown in the clue cell at its start: the number in the top-right is the total for the run going across to the right, and the number in the bottom-left is the total for the run going down. Fill in digits so each run adds up exactly to its clue.
Tips
- Hunt the extremes. Short runs with very low or very high totals have only a few possible digit combinations — start there.
- Use the crossings. Every white cell belongs to one across run and one down run; a digit must satisfy both.
- Pencil mentally. Work out which digits a run can't contain to narrow each cell down.
- Check as you go. The Check button flags any cells that don't fit, so you can catch a slip early.
Grid sizes
- Starter — a small 6×6 grid with short sums to learn the rules.
- Classic — a 7×7 grid with longer crossings.
- Expert — a dense 8×8 grid with longer sum chains.
