How to play 2048
2048 is played on a 4×4 grid. Each move slides every tile as far as it can go in one direction — up, down, left, or right. When two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into a single tile worth their sum: two 2s become a 4, two 4s become an 8, and so on. After every move that changes the board, a new tile (usually a 2, occasionally a 4) appears in a random empty cell. Reach the 2048 tile to win — but you can keep going to push your score as high as possible.
Strategy tips
- Pick a corner and commit. Keep your largest tile pinned in one corner and build around it. Most strong players favour the bottom-right or bottom-left.
- Use mostly two directions. Alternate between, say, down and right, and only break the pattern when you must. This keeps big tiles anchored.
- Build a chain. Line up a descending row of values next to your anchor (2048, 1024, 512…) so merges cascade neatly.
- Avoid the "up" move if your anchor is on the bottom — it scrambles your stack.
- Don't fill the board. Keep empty cells in reserve; a full grid with no merges available is game over.
A little history
2048 was created in March 2014 by 19-year-old Italian developer Gabriele Cirulli over a single weekend, as a free, open-source web game. It was itself inspired by earlier games 1024 and Threes!. Within a week it had millions of players and spawned countless clones — a textbook example of a dead-simple ruleset producing genuinely deep play.
