How to play Hearts
Hearts is a four-player trick-taking card game where the aim is to take as few points as you can. All 52 cards are dealt, thirteen each. Before each round you pass three cards — to the left, then the right, then across, and every fourth round you keep your hand. The player holding the 2 of clubs leads it to the first trick, and everyone must follow suit if they can. The highest card of the suit that was led wins the trick, and its winner leads the next one.
Points come only from the cards you take: every heart is one point and the Queen of Spades is thirteen. You cannot lead a heart until hearts are broken — until someone has discarded a heart or the Queen — and nobody may play a point card on the very first trick. The game ends when someone reaches the target score (100, or 50 for a quick game), and the lowest total wins.
Shooting the moon
There is one way to turn a terrible hand into a great one. Take every heart and the Queen of Spades in the same round — all 26 points — and you score nothing while every other player is given 26. It is a gamble: one heart slipping to an opponent and you are left holding 25.
Tips
- Pass the Queen, Ace and King of Spades unless you hold plenty of low spades to protect them.
- Empty a short suit early so you can discard hearts when that suit is led.
- When you cannot win a trick cheaply, play the highest card you can that still loses it.
