How to play a crossword
A crossword is a word puzzle on a grid of white and black squares. Each white square belongs to an across word and/or a down word, and every word has a numbered clue. Read the clue, work out the answer, and type it into the grid — where two words cross, the shared letter has to satisfy both clues, which is how you check yourself as you go. Our mini crosswords are quick, themed grids you can finish in a few minutes.
Tips
- Start with what you know. Fill the answers you're sure of first; their letters give you a head start on the crossing words.
- Use the crossings. A tricky clue often becomes obvious once a letter or two is already in place.
- Switch direction. Tap a selected cell again to flip between across and down.
- Check as you go. The Check button flags wrong letters, and Reveal gives you a cell or a whole word when you're stuck.
