How to play Mahjong Solitaire
Mahjong Solitaire (also called Shanghai or Mahjong tiles) is a calm single-player matching game built from the tiles of classic mahjong. The tiles are stacked into a layout, and your job is to remove them all by matching identical pairs. The catch is that you can only take a tile that's free: nothing is stacked on top of it, and either its left or its right edge is clear. Match two free tiles with the same face and they're removed, opening up the tiles beneath and beside them.
Tips
- Look before you match. Removing a pair can free — or trap — other tiles, so plan a move ahead.
- Free the stacks. Prioritise tiles that are blocking the most others, especially on the top layers.
- Use Hint sparingly. It points out one available pair when you can't spot a move.
- Shuffle when stuck. If no matches remain among the free tiles, Shuffle rearranges the remaining faces so you can continue.
Layouts
- Classic — 36 tiles in an open starter layout.
- Fortress — 48 tiles in a layered, taller stack.
- Garden — 60 tiles across a wider board.
