A capital cities quiz without ads or trick questions

Capital cities look like the most clear-cut thing in geography: one country, one answer. They are not. Some countries have two or three capitals, each with a different constitutional job. Several capitals are not the country's largest or best-known city. A few moved within living memory. Most of the questions that feel like trick questions are really a quiz that never handled these cases — here is what they are.

The cases that break a naive quiz

More than one capital. South Africa has three, and each holds a different branch of government: Pretoria is the executive capital, Cape Town the legislative, and Bloemfontein the judicial. Bolivia has two — Sucre is the constitutional capital while La Paz holds the seat of government. Côte d'Ivoire's official capital is Yamoussoukro, while Abidjan remains the largest city and economic centre. A quiz with one answer slot marks two of South Africa's three capitals wrong.

The capital is often not the biggest city. Turkey's capital is Ankara, not Istanbul. Nigeria's is Abuja, not Lagos. Brazil's is Brasília, not Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo. Australia's is Canberra, not Sydney. Canada's is Ottawa, not Toronto. The United States' is Washington, DC, not New York. This is the single most common wrong answer in the category, and it is a genuinely useful thing to learn.

Capitals move. Myanmar moved its seat of government to Naypyidaw in 2005–2006. Kazakhstan's capital was renamed Astana, then Nur-Sultan in 2019, then back to Astana in 2022. A quiz built on a stale list will confidently mark the current answer wrong.

The ten-second check

Does it accept every official capital? Ask it South Africa. If only one of Pretoria, Cape Town and Bloemfontein scores, its data model has one slot where reality has three.
Does it name its source and date? Capitals change. An undated list is a list that will eventually be wrong.
Does it explain after a miss? “Ankara, not Istanbul” teaches nothing on its own. Why the capital moved is the part that sticks.
Does it handle the genuinely unsettled cases? Some countries have no single official capital, and at least one is internationally disputed. Excluding them is more honest than inventing an answer.
Is a hint free? Gating the hint behind an ad turns a learning moment into an ad break.

Two things worth knowing before you start

“Capital” is a legal role, not a size ranking. A capital is where some part of the state's authority formally sits. That is why a purpose-built administrative city like Brasília, Canberra, Abuja or Naypyidaw can be the capital while a much larger commercial city is the one everybody has heard of. Several of these cities were built or promoted precisely to avoid giving an existing rival city the seat of government.

Some countries deliberately have no single capital. Switzerland is the well-known example: no city is named as the capital in its constitution, and Bern is designated the federal city where the government sits. Nauru has no official capital city at all — government offices are in the Yaren district. These are not gaps in the data; they are the actual answer, and a quiz that forces them into a one-city slot is inventing something.

What we built, held to the same checklist

Our disclosure: we are SnackPack Studios, and the checklist above describes what we aimed at. Atlas Quest takes its capitals from the Natural Earth populated-places dataset, at a release named in the game's Credits and data sources screen, and it stores every official capital rather than one per country. All three of South Africa's score. So do both of Bolivia's and both of Côte d'Ivoire's.

Two of the 194 countries in the game are deliberately excluded from capital questions: one has no official capital city, and one's status is internationally disputed. We would rather ask you 192 fair questions than 194 questions where two of them have no honest answer.

Common questions

Which country has three capital cities?

South Africa. Pretoria is the executive capital, Cape Town is the legislative capital and Bloemfontein is the judicial capital. Each holds a different branch of government, so all three are correct answers.

Why is the capital often not the largest city?

A capital is a legal and administrative role rather than a size ranking. Cities such as Brasília, Canberra, Abuja and Naypyidaw were built or promoted specifically to hold government, frequently to avoid handing the seat of government to an existing dominant city.

Does Switzerland have a capital?

Not one named in its constitution. Bern is designated the federal city and is where the federal government sits, which is why careful sources describe it as the de facto capital rather than the official one.

How should a quiz handle countries with disputed or absent capitals?

By excluding them from capital questions and saying so. Atlas Quest leaves two of its 194 countries out of capital rounds for exactly this reason — one has no official capital city and one's status is internationally disputed.
