Eight free printable readers for early phonics practice

Download warm, fully illustrated stories as A4 PDFs, or read them together in the browser. Six focus on early letter sounds and short vowels; two are gentle companion reads for comprehension and shared reading. Every book is free, with no account, email gate or ads.

What makes a reader decodable?

A decodable reader limits its words to letter-sound patterns a child has already learned. Instead of guessing from the picture, the child can look at each letter, say the sounds and blend them into a word.

The staged books below identify their focus sounds and call out a few high-frequency “tricky words” that may need grown-up help. Start with a stage your child can read with effort but without constant rescuing; confidence matters more than racing ahead.

How to print these PDFs

  • Paper: A4 is the native page size. Letter paper also works with “Fit” or “Fit to printable area”.
  • Simplest: print single-sided, keep the pages in order, then staple or clip them at the left.
  • To save paper: choose double-sided and flip on the long edge, then bind at the left.
  • Avoid booklet mode: each file is already in reading order, one story page per PDF page; it is not imposed for folding into a booklet.
  • Ink saver: try your printer’s draft setting first. The illustrations remain readable without borderless printing.

A simple way to use one book

  1. Before: say the focus sound and read any tricky words together.
  2. During: give the child time to sound out the word before offering it.
  3. After: reread one favourite page for fluency, then ask one story question.

Stop while the reading still feels successful. Repeating a familiar book is useful practice, not a step backwards.
